Frithjof Bergmann calls the job itself a “mild illness”: it does not kill us, but it constantly troubles us, makes us dissatisfied, drains us, takes our strength, exhausts and depresses us. In the long run, the job deforms and cripples us, so that not much of us as human beings remains when we retire.
